The season starts for the bicycle ferry on the Flensburg Fjord

From May, it will once again be possible to take a ferry tour of the fjord between Germany and Denmark

On 14 May 2026, it is time again to say “Welcome aboard as the “Friends of the Bicycle Ferry” association kicks off the new season with the “Thjalfe” bicycle ferry. The season will begin in May and June with trips on public holidays and at weekends. From 4 July until 6 September, the bicycle ferry will then run daily, connecting Langballigau on the German side with Egernsund and Brunsnæs in Denmark.

Around 7,600 passengers from over 40 countries used the bicycle ferry organised by the association last year. The association’s volunteer members are looking forward to welcoming many day-trippers, with or without bicycles, in the 2026 season as well. “Our bicycle ferry is an attractive option for holidaymakers and residents around the Flensburg Fjord. We recommend that all interested passengers plan and book their trip well in advance,” says captain and ship owner Palle Heinrich. The bicycle ferry trip can be booked via the website or Facebook. The route of the “Thjalfe” begins on the German side in Langballigau and continues via the Danish landing stages at Brunsnæs and Marina Minde to the end and starting point in Egernsund, Denmark. The bicycle ferry is licensed to carry 12 passengers and 12 bicycles. Depending on the weather, passengers can spend the journey inside the ferry or out on deck enjoying the fresh sea air. There is plenty of space for passengers, their bicycles and dogs, and the varied fjord landscape makes the crossing a special experience. This is because the bicycle ferry provides a direct link to the Gendarmenstien, one of Denmark’s most beautiful coastal walking and cycling trails.

In the past, Danish gendarmes used the path in their operations against smugglers. Many walkers and cycle tourists are drawn to the Gendarmenstien on their excursions along the northern shore of the Flensburg Fjord. From Padborg, the beautiful waterside trail runs for 84 kilometres through a landscape shaped by nature and history to Skovby on the island of Als. International tourists are also increasingly discovering this trail. In December 2024, the European Hiking Federation (ERA) awarded the Gendarmenstien the title of “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe”.

Joining us is great fun – looking for more volunteers

For the German-Danish members of the “Friends of the Bicycle Ferry” association, who have been successfully running a volunteer-operated bicycle ferry on the Flensburg Fjord between Germany and Denmark since 2019, receiving the “Initiative Award 2025” from the tourism organisation Destination Sønderjylland was a great honour. Gerhard Jacobsen, chairman of the “Friends of the Bicycle Ferry Association”, says: “We were delighted to receive this award. It is recognition of our collective commitment to establishing and operating a cross-border ferry service on the Flensburg Fjord. With the bicycle ferry, we have created a new tourist attraction on both sides of the fjord and, at the same time, serve as an example of the excellent cooperation along the fjord.”

In addition to sponsors, the “Friends of the Bicycle Ferry” association is also looking for further volunteers who wish to get involved on board or on land to look after guests, provide them with suggestions for tourist attractions in the area and take on minor tasks. “We speak Danish and German with one another and are looking for interested people from both sides of the Flensburg Fjord to help us look after passengers and with other tasks. We’d be delighted to invite anyone interested to join us on one of our trips on the “Thjalfe”,” says Gerhard Jacobsen.
